Welcome to the Tollkeeper’s Cottage

a charming, registered heritage house open to the public at the corner of Bathurst Street and Davenport Road in Toronto. We are one of the few remaining examples of a Tollhouse on nineteenth century roads. See the unique vertical plank construction, and hear about the lifestyle of a working class family.

FEBRUARY IS MENDING MONTH
“Mrs. Tollkeeper never threw away slightly worn garments!”
THIS MONTH THE TOLLKEEPER’S COTTAGE OFFERS THE EXPERTISE OF SEVERAL OF OUR MEMBERS SKILLED IN THE ART OF NEEDLEWORK, TO REPAIR YOUR KNITTED AND OTHER FABRIC GARMENTS.

WHEN?
Every Saturday in February–1, 8, 15, 22–11:00-4:00
Sunday–February 2–1:00-4:00

If we are particularly busy, we might ask you to leave your sweater, jeans, or whatever, until the following week. We do ‘visible mending’, too – rather than hide the hole, we turn it into a point of interest! Please have the garments in a sealed plastic bag, to stay clean and safe.

We ask for a donation for the upkeep of the Cottage.

“The Toronto Book of Love & The City’s Romantic Past”

Tour leader, blogger, course leader, author and speaker Adam Bunch wrote The Toronto Book of Love (2021), which explores the history of the city through fascinating true tales of romance, marriage and passion. From the scandalous love affairs of the city’s early settlers to the prime minister’s wife partying with rock stars on her wedding anniversary, Toronto has been shaped by crushes, jealousies and flirtations. In his talk, we’ll explore some of these stories, as well as discover the evolution of Toronto’s ever-changing attitudes toward love. A fitting prelude to Valentine’s Day!

Refreshments served. Space is limited. $10 donation, cash or e-transfer.
